Calgary Under Water Advisory As Major Break Impacts Supply

Calgary Under Water Advisory as Major Break Impacts Supply

Mandatory Outdoor Water Restrictions in Effect

Stage 4 Restrictions Prohibit All Outdoor Water Use

The City of Calgary has issued a mandatory water advisory effective immediately due to a critical water main break in the Bowness and Montgomery area. The break is affecting the city's water supply, leading to a Stage 4 outdoor water restriction. All residents and businesses are urged to stop all outdoor water use immediately as the city works to repair the main break and restore water supply levels.

Outdoor water restrictions are the most severe level of water conservation measures and prohibit any non-essential water use, including watering lawns, gardens, trees, shrubs, filling pools or hot tubs, and construction-related water use. Violators of the restrictions face fines of up to $1000.

The city has implemented a four-stage outdoor water restriction plan, with the severity of the restrictions increasing as the water shortage worsens. Stage 1 restrictions limit outdoor watering to certain days and times, while Stage 2 restricts all outdoor watering, except for essential purposes such as watering trees and gardens. Stage 3 restrictions prohibit all outdoor watering, except for health and safety reasons.

The water main break has also impacted the water supply in the neighboring communities of Airdrie, Strathmore, and Cochrane. Airdrie has implemented Stage 2 water restrictions, while Strathmore has implemented outdoor water restrictions similar to Calgary's Stage 1 restrictions. The city is working closely with these communities to ensure they have the water they need.
